Practical training developing skills related to identification of animal remains.
The work involves identification of osteological materials recovered during excavation works performed by employees of the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw.
Students learn the procedures of archaeozoological analysis. During the classes the students make a guided attempt at identification of mammal bones which display different degrees of fragmentation and changes caused by taphonomic factors. They learn the rules of description of bone material applying the terminology used by archaeozoologists in Polish, English and Latin. The students are trained in osteometry krysiwk standardized recording of animal bone and teeth measurements.

They are taught proper description and cataloguing of animal remains data. On the basis of observation of particular bone assemblages the students make quantitative characteristics of faunal assemblages, i.

The student has knowledge of description, analysis and interpretation of animal remains. The student has a systematic knowledge of adaptation strategies of ancient communities used in different environmental conditions reconstructed on the basis of interpretation of osteological materials. The student has an extensive knowledge of connections between archaeology and natural sciences, and is aware of the possibility to use krysisk observations and statistical methods for the research of animal economy in different periods and parts of the world.
The student knows how to analyze and interpret the results of examination of animal bone assemblages with the application of modern methods of archaeozoological analysis.
The student knows how to communicate with specialists in archaeozoology, in particular in situations related to identification and interpretation of osteological materials.
The student is aware of the high value of animal remains for the reconstruction of patterns related to meat consumption, the type of animal economy and the role of animals in the belief system of ancient communities.
