However, you would not know any of this from my Edition, a second-hand copy of its inclusion in the Erotic Prints Society’s ‘Scarlet Library’ which has no introduction, notes or bibiliography.
What that Edition does have is excellent erotic illustrations by Vania Zouravliov. That is why I am happy to re Gamiani is a somewhat Sadean quasi-Gothic erotic novel of the s which has been attributed, although not certainly, to Alfred De Musset and which even reached the hands of Edith Wharton no gamiahi. That is why I am happy to refer to it here while suggesting you find an edition with nigjts background information.
As for the story, it is a tale of extreme and destructive erotic passion with the standard issue references to the depravities to be found in convents and amongst the clergy but it is rather well written.
Assuming you do not have serious problems with ‘disgust’ this is, after all, only an exercise in the imaginationthe bulk of the book is a very erotic read indeed but it is definitely not for faint hearts. Away from its stimulating content which is likely to interest only a fewit does have some additional interest as a serious literary attempt at following De Sade but in the context of Romanticism.
Though not perfect by any means, it succeeds in its aims and provides an insight into a mind-set whose next gaiani literary flowering, after a gap, would be in the Decadent Movement.
Consider it an experiment. Apr 14, Reetta Saine rated it really liked it Shelves: Oct 11, Cristina Contilli added it. What an amazing piece of literature! This was the first time I have ever read 19th Century French literature if it can be called that but it certainly won’t be the last. While the actual story was only 92 pages, it was certainly what you would say “bang for your buck!
Overly erotic for the duration, the tale encompasses two nights of passion between two women and a man and, during that time, they tell the stories of their first times This is definitely not the book for those who like their romance sweet and light, nor is it a story for those excsss are gamiai for the definitive French literature – however, if you fall somewhere in between and have no problem with sexual depravity and graphic descriptions then you may very well enjoy this.

The book is interesting for two reasons 1 supposedly Alfred fancied the female author and bi-sexual George Sand Baroness Dudevant on whom the countess may be based. Alfred de Musset is one of my favorite novelist and poets.
He has a great style in writing, and once you read on of his works, you cannot leave it until finished. The book od disturbing in its content about the destructive powers of human sensuality when it gets out of control, coupled with lust, fantasies, and burning desires.

There are numerous descriptions of extremely sexual, gamiain events in churches, convents. Jul 17, Lauren rated it really liked it Shelves: While certain acts in this story were difficult to read comfortably, I must say that Nighgs translation is beautiful.
The prose flows elegantly and makes the book difficult to put down. Would be a five star if not for the bestiality that was very difficult to read.
Mar 23, Martha Sofia Franco rated it liked it. Part of the so erotic fiction written in the 19th century.
Pretty poetic, but it portrays lesbian relationships like aggresive and condemned to death, which, to the 21st century’s eyes, it’s not accurate at all. It has completely changed my opinion about cher Musset! Apr 06, Angelica rated it liked it.
